Twitter is useful, but it's also important to understand what Twitter can, and cannot do.

Why is Twitter Good for my business?
To generate sales, you need to build visibility, credibility and relationships. Twitter helps build all three.

Create Visibility
The first step here is to have a strong Twitter page, and get as many legit followers as you can via existing relationships. We can't effectively generate visibility to a Twitter page that is essentially an "empty room". Once you have a few followers, then we can go get you more. As an important side note, Google will notice your rise to Twitter fame a stardom. Google will take this as a sign that your business is important, and you will see an increase in search traffic.

  • Step #1 Ensure your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn pages and website are optimized.
  • Step #2 Follow people. People love to gain followers. Say something interesting to them after you follow them. If they decide you're interesting, they will probably follow you back.
  • Step #3 Join in Twitter conversations (using legit, respected account), and reference a post on your company website / social media page that is topical to the discussion.

No matter how obscure your products are, there is a good chance someone is discussing them on Twitter. Right now, your business is probably not mentioned in these discussions. When people are looking for your products right now Twitter, they are probably not learning about your business. We will help them find you. If they can't find you, they won't buy from you. We'll them find you.

Create Credibility (via an interesting and popular Twitter Feed)
Talk about interesting developments. Don't show off, but if you have something interesting to say, say it. This is the time to be an extrovert. Write about interesting topics on your website, and reference those topics on your Twitter feed. Ask questions, and talk to people that follow you.

Build Relationships
People enjoy doing business with good people. Help the people that follow you. And, do it because you enjoy helping them. Don't worry about closing a deal. Just help people. Get to know them in a professional manner. The goal here is to build relationships. And you can use this as a way to help people. If you can help people solve a business problem, there's a good chance they will become a client.

Generate Sales
Eventually, your Twitter followers will need your product. When they do, if they're spent a year reading your Twitter feed, they will probably buy from you.

Generate sales by Connecting With People Who Need Your Product
Twitter is filled with medical professionals who keep busy with shameless self-promotion. New York City’s Dr. Sinkin belongs in a different category. He’s a dentist who actually engages his followers.

Dr. Sinkin uses Twitter’s search function and third-party services to find conversations related to the dental field. When he runs across a tweet related to dentistry, he joins the conversation. For example, if he sees a tweet that indicates someone has a toothache, he introduces himself as a dentist and includes a list of remedies to try.

Reputation Monitoring & Customer Relationship Management
If people are going to talk with you online, they'll probably do it on Twitter first. We find it's good to monitor that discussion. Clients are fickle, and it doesn't matter how good you are, someone is going to complain at some point. As part of our SEO, we're monitoring your Twitter buzz anyway. If someone is complaining (or talking about how great you are) online, we'll let you know. You can nip the problem at the bud. Like we said, it's not common for people to complain. But, when they do, it's nice to address the problem right away. That way, you don't find out the problem by seeing negative reviews, of or bad publicity in the Google search results for your company. This is really just about being pro-active (and often, the customer feed back is very, very useful).

SEO and your Twitter Page
There is a significant amount of public, online discussions on Twitter. If you can make a real contribution to these discussions, you can generate a significant amount of real links. There is a large SEO opportunity here. Since most accounts on Twitter are public (whereas on both Google+ and Facebook, most are private), it's much easier to find and join in conversations. Aside from advertising, on Facebook you really have to wait for people to "like" your page before you can interact with them directly. Not so with Twitter. But, Twitter moves much more quickly than both Google+ and Facebook, so the life span of any given tweet is also much shorter. This usually means that you need to be posting content to Twitter more frequently in order to be keeping up with the pace.

We can leverage your Twitter profile as a way to get you some good links. The goal is to get people talking about you on Twitter. By doing this, we create real links. Google can tell if a link is a fake. So, even though we won't creat 1,000's of links. The links that we creat through Twitter will actually make a difference.

We often find that our clients have an strong Twitter following, but we don't see too many posts about the SEO keywords that our clients care about on this feed. We can use some of our content writing budget to write Twitter posts for you, which you can edit and post.

SEO is not the fundamental reason to have a Twitter account. But, it does create opportunities for synergy. Having a strong Twitter page helps drive sales. Having a strong Twitter profile also makes you famous online. And Google seems this Twitter fame as an indication that you're important. So, by creating a strong Twitter feed, and incorporating keywords into that feed, you can generate revenue through the Twitter feed, and get some good Google traffic as well.

Twitter in a Nutshell
Twitter has about 650 million users worldwide who publish about 58 million new tweets every day. Each “tweet” (published post) is limited to 140 characters, and text is more prevalent than images. One of the most valuable things that Twitter offers to business is the ability to search content, making it relatively easy to find users and conversations that are relevant to your product or service. And, unlike Facebook where a user has to “like” your business page before you can interact with them, Twitter allows any user to converse with any other user with a public profile. Our favorite strategy on Twitter generally looks something like this:

  • Search (using keywords and/or hashtags) for conversations that are germane to your business.
  • Follow influencers and other users talking about this topic(s).
  • Join in the conversation (provide value).
  • Contact select users from these conversations for further discussion and, if appropriate, make a more direct sales pitch.
  • Create social media buzz around your company’s products in the process.
  • Analyze results and make adjustments to the strategy.

We have some current clients who are experiencing great success with this strategy; however, they all had one thing in common at the beginning of the campaign: existing active Twitter accounts. They were already posting good information, and doing it consistently. So, when they contact other users directly, it’s just one part of their overall Twitter activities. If your business doesn’t already have a solid active Twitter account, it’s best to spend some time building one before you launch into any marketing activities in order to avoid looking like spam. And, of course, we’re happy to help you with this initial step as well.

Who should have Twitter page? We find that Twitter works best for people that already have a large following or have an expensive, and relatively obscure product / service.
